Finding rewarding work in elder care

I’ve been a geriatric nurse for over a decade, and I truly find joy in the little victories, like helping a resident remember their favorite song… However, I’m curious how others navigate the emotional challenges of this job. What strategies do you use to maintain balance and joy in your work?

It sounds like you really find meaning in those small moments. I’ve learned that taking time for myself, even just a walk outside during breaks, can help recharge me emotionally. What do you usually do when you need a quick reset?

Finding balance in elder care can feel like juggling flaming torches sometimes! One thing I do is set aside a few minutes to reflect on the positive interactions I’ve had each day — it really helps keep the spirits high. What’s one small moment that brightened your week?

, I totally get the emotional rollercoaster of this job… I’ve found that sharing my experiences with colleagues really helps — just someone to vent to can make a world of difference. @mreese54, have you tried any support groups or chats for caregivers? It can be tough to keep the joy alive when the days are so heavy.

But i’ve found incorporating regular team huddles to share those little victories, like helping someone recall their favorite song, creates a supportive atmosphere. It can be tough to keep that joy alive solo, so getting everyone involved really helps. Have you tried anything like that with your team?
