Navigating Post-Surgical Recovery in Orthopedics

I’ve noticed that post-surgical care in orthopedics can really vary from one facility to another. Recently, we started using a new protocol involving specialized physical therapy sessions within the first 48 hours after surgery, and it seems to be making a difference in our patients’ recovery times. I’m curious how others are managing post-op care — any tips or practices that have worked well for you?

I get what you mean about the timing — > hours after surgery, and it seems to be making a difference in our patients’ recovery times. We’ve been pushing for early mobility, and it’s frustrating when facilities resist that. Just last month, we had a patient start PT within 36 hours, and it cut down their hospital stay significantly. I wish more places would adopt similar protocols.

That early physical therapy within 48 hours can be a game changer. We’ve seen great results by incorporating specific mobilization exercises right after surgery, which has helped our patients feel more in control. Although some staff worry about the strain, we’ve found it results in quicker recoveries overall — @csmith_89, have you noticed any pushback from the team on this approach?

I’ve seen great results with early mobilization, too. It’s crucial to tailor exercises based on each patient’s needs. @csmith_89, have you tried incorporating patient education during those first few days?

It’s interesting to hear about your new protocols. We’ve had success with setting clear goals for patients even before the surgery. Engaging them early helps in compliance with the physical therapy sessions. @hgreen31, how do you handle goal setting with your patients post-op?
