Year the FDA barcode rule took effect

Which year did the FDA bar code label requirement for human drug products take effect — the one that underpins our eMAR/BCMA scanning at 0700? I’m tightening up a med safety module and want the timeline exact; my notes say 2004 effective with most manufacturers compliant by 2006 — can anyone verify from their rollout experience?

Your 2004 effective/2006 compliance note matches what we saw; I’d pin the slide to “effective April 26, 2004” and note most labels were in by April 26, 2006, which is how we frame 0700 BCMA in training. Quick caveat: blood components and in-house unit-dose repacks had separate timelines, so I footnote the Federal Register rule for clarity: Federal Register :: Bar Code Label Requirement for Human Drug Products and Biological Products. Want the exact dates shown or just the years?

I’m with you on 2004; our BCMA rollout rode that wave, but repacks/unit-dose relabels were the laggards — . It’s 21 CFR 201.25 and it only required a linear code carrying the NDC; OTCs not commonly used in hospitals and extemporaneous compounds weren’t in scope, which is why some 0700 eMAR scans still needed manual checks into 2006.
